As per Gurmat or Vedmat:
Haun-Mai (ਹਉ-ਮੈ) is a Composite Word.
it is associated with consciousness of being (ਬ੍ਰਹਮ, ਜੀਵ).
Consciousness is sentient (ਚੇਤਨ), and as per Gurmat it has two components:
The Inner Consciousness and the Outer Consciousness.
Also referred in Gurbani with the following synonyms:
ਮਨ ਅਤੇ ਮੂਲ (Man and Mool)
ਮਨ ਅਤੇ ਚਿਤ (Man and Chit)
ਦੇਵਾ ਅਤੇ ਦੇਵ (Deva and Dev)
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਅਤੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ (Braham and Brahma)
ਆਤਮਾ ਅਤੇ ਆਤਮ (Aatama and Aatam)
ਆਤਮਾ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਤਮਾ (Aatama and Paratma)
Haun (ਹਉ) seems to associated with the inner consciousness or Mool (ਮੂਲ).
Mai (ਮੈ) is associated with the outer consciousness or Manh (ਮਨ)
Gurmat has suggested a remedy to this Chronic Disease of Haun-mai (ਹਉ-ਮੈ).
Through the of Gur-bani or Ved-bani contemplation (ਜਪ) and applying it in real life situations we can shred the Haun-Mai (ਹਉ-ਮੈ).
ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਜੇ ਬੁਝੈ ਤ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਹੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥੨॥ ਪੰਨਾ ੧
The word ਹਉਮੈ appears in the Second Pauri of Jap(u).
ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਜੇ ਬੁਝੈ
What is ਬੁਝੈ ?
It will means: to solve (a riddle), or know the answer (to a question);
to comprehend, understand; to guess, conjecture, infer, deduce.
It is only after knowing about the Hukam ( ਹੁਕਮ) from within Gurbani we can understand the reality of Hau-Mai (ਹਉਮੈ).
Let us try to understand it briefly through Gurbani:
ਸਲੋਕ ਮ; ੧ ॥
ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਆਇਆ ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਗਇਆ ॥ ਪੰਨਾ ੪੬੬
In this stanza their is an Indication that the.
Being (Braham, Mool) has entered this physical world (Bhavsagar) in ਹਉ (Ego)
If the being does not eradicate his Hau-Mai (ਹਉਮੈ) while living in the Bhavsagar, he will be due foranother Incarnation due to this ਹਉ (Ego) which he has been caring from previous incarnations.
Hence the ਹਉ (Ego) is the primary reason for the Rebirth of being as per Gurmat.
We can further conclude that the being carries the ਹਉ (Ego) right at birth.
But the ਮੈ (Mai) seems to be associated at later stage.
Please read this Shalok and see for yourself the term ਹਉਮੈ appears bit later after coming into this physical body the Jant (ਜੰਤ)
ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਛਾਇਆ ॥
ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਜੰਤ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥
ਹਉਮੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਤਾ ਦਰੁ ਸੂਝੈ ॥
ਗਿਆਨ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਕਥਿ ਕਥਿ ਲੂਝੈ ॥
When that Braham is attaching himself to ਮਾਇਆ during the Pregnancy, it gets another Shadow (ਛਾਇਆ)
It is now in the Stage of Jant (ਜੰਤ)
ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਜੰਤ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥
He now has ਮੈ associated as well
Braham had just ਹਉ (Ego)
Jant has both ਹਉ and ਮੈ (Ego)
ਹਉਮੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਤਾ ਦਰੁ ਸੂਝੈ ॥
The Braham has to realise this and try to get rid of first the Mai (ਮੈ ) then the Hau (ਹਉ ) to find the door of Salvation from Bhavsagar (ਤਾ ਦਰੁ ਸੂਝੈ )
At this Stage the Being is now Pooranbraham and then he can enter his
ਨਿਜ ਘਰ ( home of the self deep within) or Sachkhand.
As per Gurbani he need to come to the door first which is done through the Jap (Understanding) of Gur Shabad (Gurbani).
Without the wisdom of Gurbani the Jeev is just Babbling
ਗਿਆਨ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਕਥਿ ਕਥਿ ਲੂਝੈ ॥
Without spiritual wisdom, the Jant babbles and argues. |
