ਬਿਹਾਰੀ: BIHAAREE Vowel can be used with all alphabets except ” ੳ “

It is known as a extended vowel (Deeragh Matra) and is written after the letter and can be used in beginning middle or towards the end of the word.

In Gurbani Writings BIHAAREE (ਬਿਹਾਰੀ) is used for the following purposes:
1) As a preposition with Plural Nouns :

• ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਜਿ ਦਿਤਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੋ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਸਿਖੀ ਕੰਨੇ ॥ (ਸਿਖਾਂ ਨੇ)
• ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਭਾਣਾ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਇ ॥(ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾਂ ਨੇ)
• ਅਖੀ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਵੇਖਣਾ ਵਿਣੁ ਕੰਨਾ ਸੁਨਣਾ ॥
• ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਹੋਆ ਕਿਰਪਾਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਸੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪੈਰੀ ਪਾਹੀ ॥

ਸਿਖੀਂ, ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀਂ, ਅਖੀਂ, ਪੈਰੀਂ (All these words MUST be read with a Bindi Vowel to indicate Plural words)
2) With verbs :

a) Verbs ending with letter “ਨ” (NANNA) and having biharee vowel, are in plural form.

• ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰੂ ਨ ਚੇਤਨੀ ਮਨਿ ਆਪਣੈ ਸੁਚੇਤ ॥ (ਯਾਦ ਨਹੀ ਕਰਦੇ)
• Same with verbs like: ਜਾਪਨੀ, ਪਾਇਨੀ, ਧਾਵਨੀ.

b) As present tense.

• ਮੂੰਡਿ ਮੁੰਡਾਇਐ ਜੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਮ ਗੁਰੁ ਕੀਨੀ ਗੰਗਾਤਾ ॥
• ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਸੁਨੀ ਸ੍ਰਵਨ ਬਖਾਣੀ ॥

c) As past tense.

• ਜਿਨਿ ਸਿਸਟਿ ਸਾਜੀ ਸੋਈ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
• ਸਿਧੁ ਹੋਵਾ ਸਿਧਿ ਲਾਈ ਰਿਧਿ ਆਖਾ ਆਉ ॥

d) As future tense.

• ਹੈ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਸੀ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ॥੧॥
• ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਕਰਸੀ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਕਰਣਾ ਜਾਈ ॥

3) Replacement for Siharee (ਸਿਹਾਰੀ) vowel.

• ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਤਿਨ ਮਾਰੇ ਜਮ ਜੰਦਾਰੁ ॥ Instead of ਜਾਣਨਿ
• ਸਾਹੇ ਲਿਖੇ ਨ ਚਲਨੀ ਜਿੰਦੂ ਕੂੰ ਸਮਝਾਇ ॥ Instead of ਚਲਨਿ
